In the introduction in Jenkins book Convergence Culture Jenkins first discusses the Photoshop collage “Bert Is Evil.” This poster was posted on the web and distributed later all across the Middle East. This caught my attention and made me want to read more. The “Bert Is Evil” poster shows how fast a situation can progress in a short amount of time.
Jenkins makes it clear in the introduction what three concepts he will cover in the book:
1. Media convergence
2. Participatory culture
3. Collective intelligence
Jenkins makes us think “how existing media industries (radio, TV, newspapers, advertisers) are changing in order to cater to the desires of audiences to become creators and not merely consumers of content? Listed below are related ideas:
• Must be able to create web advertisements and news articles for the web, because this is where our society goes for information right now
• On NBC5 News viewers can submit their nature pictures through email to appear on the 10pm news
• People are down loading music and movies for free online and not purchasing cds, videos, etc.. at stores as often
• The best web sites such as Google, Yahoo and You Tube get the most “hits” and are the most successful obtaining web advertisements
• You can even have you personal/ work email sent directly to your phone (Blackberry or iphone)
• Consumers now go online to shop, instead of going to retail stores to shop. When a shopper goes to the store, they are more apt to buy more than they want/ need.
• Companies now need to have a web site to market their product.
• Some companies even have their employee training sites accessible online, so the employees can work on work related training at home as well as in the office
